What is PED?
The PED (Pressure Equipment Directive) is a product directive issued by the European Community (2014/68/EU) that sets the standards for the design, fabrication, installation, and use of pressure equipment. The new legislation replaces the 97/23/EC of May 1997, promulgated in the ‘90s as a first step towards the approval of laws about industrial plants shared among all the EU countries.
In order to be considered regular and therefore marketed, pressure equipment must pass rigorous tests; only if the products are considered compliant, they can obtain the PED certification.
The Directive requires manufacturers of pressure equipment to assess and indicate the level of hazard of the product itself, which must then be built on the basis of the results of the analysis. The concept of hazard is closely linked to that of energy stored in the equipment, whose value is calculated taking into account, among the different variables, the size of the equipment, the maximum pressure, and the type of fluid contained in the tank.
The parameters listed in the PED must be applied to all those valves, pipes and vessels subject to a relative pressure equal to or greater than 0.5 bar. According to these criteria, quick opening closures are among the accessories that must comply with the regulation.
How to obtain PED certification
In order to obtain the PED certification and the CE marking on a pressurized product, the item must comply with the requirements of the Directive.
Tests to verify compliance with the production criteria of pressure equipment are carried out by competent authorities who have the task of verifying the type of material with which the product is made, the quality of its components, and the general reliability of the machinery. Only if the evaluation is successful the product will obtain the certification necessary for its sale.
